The ideal: All travel should benefit both visitor and
visited. The inevitable costs should be outweighed by the inspiration
and insight gained. Travel has always been an essential component of
human advancement. Now, as our global interconnectedness becomes more
and more evident, the promise and the challenge are greater than ever.
The reality: Travel presents a complex and ever-changing
tension between the thrill of discovery and the cost to the environment.
Curious primate that we are, we are not about to stop searching for the
new. We need to learn to do it sustainably.
As travelers, we have great influence over how the tourism industry responds
to the threat and the potential of technology. Whether we seek authentic
solutions, or accept convenient feel-good gestures depends on the depth
of our awareness, and our willingness to think like scientists as well
as artists.
Driven by curiosity, we seek collaboration between all disciplines.
